New York Cityeast Village Top 5 Great Little Known Restaurants and Cafes

The next time you are planning your big adventure in the Big Apple, whether you first or hundreth, take the time to explore the East Village neighbourhood and take the time out to try out at least one, or all, of these places:

Podunk

231 E 5th St. between 2nd and 3rd Ave.

Situated on a quiet, tree lined street away from the hustle and bustle of St. Mark's and the Avenues, PODUNK presents itself as a perfect oppurtunity to take a quiet rest from a day of shopping. This charming Tea House features an ever changing menu of specially fused teas and an assortment of delicious pastries and snack sized sandwiches. Iced teas in the summer are a great way to refresh, and the warm, comfortable interior space offers the perfect place to escape the winter cold. Order one of the many "sets" offered on the menu, sit back, and enjoy a truly unique NYC experience.

Soba Koh

309 E 5th St. between 2nd and 1st Ave.

One of the best kept secrets of the East Village. This Japanese restaurant, specializing in hand made Soba noodle, offers a wide menu of appetizers and Soba dishes. Noodles are made daily  by hand on location, you can watch the process in the early afternoons right through the front window. The Sake selection is excellent, and I would recommend asking the server for recommendation on the seasonal stock. The broth is perfectly balanced, not over-powering, nor too bland. If you have never had the pleasure of experiencing Soba noodles in Japan, this will probably be the closest you can get to it without having to fly half the way around the world. The space is small, modern and comfortable. I would recommend the daily lunch specials, and calling ahead to make sure of hours and seat availability as the place can get filled up very quickly.

Frank

88 2nd Ave. between 5th and 6th St.

A home style Italian restaurant with a great street-facing patio for summer people watching, and extremely homey interior. Daily specials and great wine selection, and not to mention some of the best Italian dishes you can get in the city. Frank has been around for a decade, and it shows by the large dinner crowds. Once you enter the place, you're suddenly in someone's home, surrounded by good people and having a good time. Come early and enjoy another unique East Village dining experience.

Cafe Mogador

101 St Mark's Place between 1st Ave and Avenue A.

Although notoriously difficult to get into during peak times, it is definitely worth coming early or waiting a bit. Cafe Mogador has been a fixture on the stretch of St. Mark's for more than 25 years, serving really great Moroccan food. It is one of the best brunch destinations, especially on the weekends.

Liquiteria

170 2nd Avenue between 10th and 11th St.

An in and out health shake and delicious sandwich shop. If you're wandering around the neighbourhood, drop by for a Green Monster and some Vegan cookies. Watch surfing videos while you wait for your order to be made in front of you from fresh ingredients, then either sit outside on the provided benches and people watch or simply continue on your way. Friendly service and reasonable prices, not to mention again how good everything is
