Lyndhurst Castle or Mansion was started in 1838 by famed architect Alexander Jackson Davis in Gothic Revival style. Davis finished the first phase of the castle in 1842 for New York City Mayor William Paulding, Jr. but was hired back by new owner George Merritt to double the size of the castle mansion in 1864. Merritt called the place Lyndenhurst until 1880 when it was sold to railroad tycoon and robber baron financier Jay Gould.
